Distribution data (UTM grid 10X10 km) and Status quo of Natrix tessellata (Laurenti, 1768) in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Natrix tessellata is known to be very widespread and abundant snake in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina but even so very little exact records can be found in herpetological literature. In this paper we present summary of all the records from the literature, data from the collections of museums, data from our field surveys and records of field researchers with reliable knowledge of Natrix tessellata. All the data is plotted in UTM (10x10km) grid system and updated distribution map is drawn. General extent of occurrence is, as expected, continuous over whole research area and area of occupancy is enlarged by 57%. Due to wide distribution and high abundance we suggest that conservation status of Natrix tessellata should be updated to Least concern (LC) both in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
