Technical manual for assessment of project impact on large carnivores either individually or within planning documents – example windfarms

Since the biggest threat to large carnivore survival is habitat fragmentation and loss, the best approach for reduction and avoidance of individual and cumulative impacts is appropriate spatial positioning of windfarms and individual wind turbines. Therefore the Manual propose an assessment methodology based on the sensitivity map, which was created throughout mathematical modelling and GIS, using data on large carnivore occurrences and related habitat characteristics. The sensitivity map indicates importance of certain area for each species of large carnivores and defines nine classes of habitat sensitivity (see table below). Five sensitivity maps have been developed: for each species of large carnivores individually (bear, wolf, lynx), for bear dens and for all three species together. The manual is in Croatian with summary in English.
