The Management Plan for the Wolf in Croatia is a document that gives instructions on activities that need to be implemented in order to secure the long-term conservation of this species, in as harmonic a co-existence with humans as possible. The plan is the result of many years of work to compile and observe all the known scientific, social and economic factors that impact wolf conservation in Croatia.

Legislative framework

The drafting of the management plan with action plan (MPAP) is envisaged by the Nature Protection Act (OG 70/05, 139/08). The Ministry prescribes the protection measures for strictly protected wild taxa and protection measures for their habitats through the MPAP. According to the Strategy and Action Plan for the Protection of Biological and Landscape Diversity of the Republic of Croatia (NSAP; OG 81/99, 143/08), the State Institute for Nature Protection has been entrusted with the preparation of the MPAP, while potential implementers of activities are the Institute, Ministry of Culture, external associates, non-governmental organizations and public institutes.

What are management plans with action plans, and why are they adopted?

The conservation of threatened, strictly protected species in Croatia is ensured through the implementation of management plans with action plans (MPAP). MPAPs contain detailed protection measures for strictly protected taxa and protection measures for their habitats. The advantage of planning protection is that it allows for the possibilities of harmonizing priority activities for protection and the delegation of tasks and responsibilities for specific activities.
