The Red List of Threatened Plants and Animals of Croatia

The world union for nature conservation (The World Conservation Union, IUCN) has laid down the criteria for identification of threatened plant and animal species and preparation of the so-called red list of species.

The main objective of the red list is to draw the attention of government and scientific institutions, non-governmental organizations and the general public to species considered threatened and to the need to take steps to eliminate threats.
In other words, this list serves as a basis for setting the priorities in preparation and implementation of plans for the protection of threatened species. Each year the IUCN Species Survival Commission prepares a world red list and individual countries their national red lists.

The Red List of Threatened Plants and Animals of Croatia is a result of co-operation between the former Ministry of Environmental Protection and Physical Planning, the State Institute for Nature Protection and numerous competent experts who consolidated the results of years-long studies of individual plant and animal groups or species in the manner that ensures the most efficient interconnection of the science and nature conservation practices. This Red List includes a part of the animate world of Croatia only, covering the following groups: vascular flora, underground fauna, butterflies, freshwater fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
