Red Book of Freshwater Fishes in Croatia

With its 151 freshwater fish species recorded so far, of which 18 are Croatian endemics, Croatia ranks second in Europe by the richness of ichthyofauna. Freshwater fishes are one of the most endangered groups of vertebrates. It is therefore not surprising that 91 fish taxa are included in the  Red Book of Freshwater Fishes of Croatia, representing as much as 60% of freshwater ichthyofauna in Croatia. Apart from basic information on the freshwater ichthyofauna in Croatia, this book is particularly valuable because it is here that all data on species contained in the Red List have been incorporated and systematically presented in one place for the first time. Each species is presented in detail by indicating its Latin name; synonyms, affiliation to a family and gender; Croatian and foreign names; origin of the species; IUCN category, criteria and causes of threat; distribution and map using the UTM projection; frequency of the species; description and biology of the species; the habitat described and presented according to PHYSIS Palearctic classification; protection measures and a photo or a drawing of the species.
