Projects

National Ecological Network – areas important for birds in Croatia

In period from December 2002 till May 2005 the State Institute for Nature Protection implemented the project Building-up the National Ecological Network as a Part of the Pan-European Ecological Network & NATURA 2000 Network (CRO-NEN). The project was co-financed by the European Commission LIFE III fund. One of the main goals of the project was to prepare the proposal of the National Ecological Network which consists of areas important for species and habitats threatened on national and European level. NATURA 2000 represents implementation of EU nature protection legislation: the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive.
Through the CRO-NEN project Institute of ornithology summarized data on all wild birds listed in Annex I of Birds Directive as well as new data on birds threatened on national level but not listed in Annex I. Distribution maps with important sites for each of those species were produced. The forty areas most suitable for the conservation of those species were identified.
These areas cover 40% of the land territory and 42% of the marine territory of Croatia. It makes a framework of the National Ecological Network which in addition evaluates areas important for threatened species other then birds and habitat types according to the Habitats Directive. This publication presents essential information on each of the forty areas identified as important areas for the protection of birds in Croatia. The majority of data came from the investigations carried out by the employers and associates of the Institute of ornithology in period 1995-2004. Management guidelines for each site have been proposed, needed for efficient protection of birds. Based on this information, the State Institute for Nature Protection has prepared the GIS Map of important bird sites as a part of the Map of National ecological network. Results of the projects presented in this publication are major step towards implementation of NATURA 2000 in Croatia.
